A warm summer's day at the Giant's Ring in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I got down low and focused on the flowers, rather than on the henge (which is a little beyond the focus plane).

Ideally I would have liked to have got lower and closer to the flowers, but it was very busy out there today.

(Reworked from scratch 1 August. This version is much brighter and softer, perhaps a bit too soft and lacking contrast, but I like the effect.)

It is an interesting area, with views from many angles. I think really the place would be at its best during the "golden hours". It looks a bit ordinary in the middle of the day. I may just need to try harder :)

(Might be a good backdrop for one of your Nepal photos. I'm sure there would bound to be someone out there most of the time).

Is this HDR?

Hi. Nope, no HDR was used in this single exposure. Just DxO Optics and Photoshop. :)

However, it does use a new technique - or rather piece of kit - ND graduated Cokin filter. I've been looking for one of these for a while. Thanks to the filter, both the sky and land exposure came out just about right.

Please disregard the comment on the other piece, where I was talking about the grass being a bad choice for HDR shots. XD I got confused. The overdeveloped look bothers me in this one, too, because the sky looks almost blackish on top. And the grass here looks really bizarre because there seem to be clear lines where the focus shifts. It doesn't look much like a photograph or a real scene. It's flattened. Maybe because the colors are all equally sharp and saturated? I know the focus changes, but when you're looking into the distance (or even at a realistic painting of a landscape), you expect what's in the foreground to be sharper and have more contrast, and things in the distance to be less sharp and have faded color.

No worries. Thanks for the feedback. I guess the sky is the result of the grad filter I was using. It is dark near the top, but I didn't think I'd overdone it. The strangeness of the grass may be because I was down low to the ground, and I used quite a shallow depth of field. There is a line where you can see the stones sit on the grass, but the grass continues. This is the bank in the background, which is blurred moreso than the rest of the grass.

Perhaps it would help of I blurred the near foreground a little and the bank at the back a bit more. Again, the grad filter may explain why the background seems darker than it should be. It may not have been the best angle/DOF for this shot. I'll bear it in mind for future shots.
